Lessons Learned From Freelancing

The client is not a programmer, and does not understand “back-end” work. My client called me up angrily many, many times calling me lazy and accusing me of doing nothing on his site. “I don’t see any changes!” he said. The client doesn’t understand that when you are building a huge form, it is not just dragging and dropping fields onto a canvas. You are doing client-side and server-side validation, captchas, maybe database work and protection against MySQL injection, email formatting, etc etc etc. That little form that looks like it would take 15 minutes ended up taking 4 hours, but the client doesn’t get it. Make sure you quote, as best you can, how long it will really take to get that _______ done, and explain why!
